I am reviewing drawings that were engineered in Dubai. I am not familiar with designs in Europe or anywhere else only America. Where can I find section properties for beams called out as UB 178x102x10 etc.. They refer to a building code called BS 5950, what is this? Any help would be appreciated.

BS is British Standard, and BS5950 is what we use over to design steelwork, im looking at it as we speak! The UB stands for Universal Beam sections - did you mean 178 x 102 x 19? Just as thats thats a more standard section. Either way check out Corus Construction online, they produce section property tables which will give you everything you need to know.

The UB 178 section looks like it might be British. STAAD Pro's data base has foreign shapes. If you have STAAD, that might be a good place to start.

This is a steel building and yes it was STAAD and no we don't use STAAD only RAM. UB designation is STAAD and not a British or European designation? The fabricator is using the same designation.

The links down the left side will give you the section properties, local moment capacity, lateral buckling capacity, tensile and compressive capacity when assessed using BS 5950.

UB is a UK section designation, nothing to do with Staad.

You will need a copy of BS5950 Part 1. BS5950 is an ultimate limit strength code which is similar, but not indentical to LRFD. It uses different partial safety factors on both loads and material properties.

As this is designed to BS 5950 you might also need supporting UK codes. There is a strong possibility that the wind forces will be calculated to the old, obsolete, UK code CP3 Ch5. You should check this as the current UK code BS6399 might not be usable for Dubai...

Steel data interms of section properties is available as Ussuri says. Again, be careful of steel grade. BS5950 assumes a minimum yeild strength steel of 275N/mm2. This is higher that US steel. The middle east is full of steel supplied to US standards so you might need to pro-rate stress values. Generally this is simple but do pay attention to the reduction in stress with material thickness.
