We did a tensile test on a 4140 specimin used to manufacture a part I want to analyze. I want to use this information for input to FEA, but have a question:

Q: Should I convert the stress strain tensile test data from engineering stress/strain to true stress/strain data? I think the answer is yes but I want to confirm.

Thank You

I take it that:

1) your analysis is non-linear?
2) your total strains expected in the analysis are greater than 5%?

If both are true, yes you should convert to true stress/strain. Otherwise no need.

Yes, there is some highly localized strain that I am trying get get a better handle on.

Thank You for the response.
