For a Steam system onboard a ship, we need to have an atmospheric dump condenser to dump any excess steam during periods of low demand. Is there any guideline on the sizing of the dump condenser? Should it be equal to the Boiler steam generation capacity?

The crucial words here are "excess steam".

Only you can decide what that is. Making it the maximum your boiler can produce would seem to be not economic. but that's up to you.

What's the downside of undersizing it?

I assume there is a separate relief valve venting straight to atmosphere?

Yu can see the entirety of your system, we can only see the minimal amount of information you've given us, so you will only get back a minimal amount of comment....

Let the NEWBIE GUESSING GAMES BEGIN !!!!

What, exactly do you mean by "atmospheric dump condenser" ?.... Where is the excess heat being dumped into ?

"Air-cooled dump condensers" exist ... Is this what you mean ?.... They are massive and not suitable for marine usage

Perhaps, as a confused newbie, you are referring to a BAROMETRIC Condenser ?.... Nobody knows !!! ... Since this is your first condenser ..

But, Barometric condensers are ancient, ancient devices and rarely used in "dump" service..... Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Perhaps you are referring to something else ?..... who knows ???
