Hi Expert,

I have some issue regarding weld overlay using ER2209 (Duplex)

Is it possible to weld overlay ER2209 direct to carbon steel (1st Layer and 2nd layer with ER2209) instead of using buffer layer ER309L (1st Layer ER309L + 2nd Layer ER2209) , Is there any Corrosion problem as per G48 Testing or A923 testing ?
I just think ER2209 have %Cr and %Ni lesser than ER309L, so may be we need buffer layer to accomodate dilution on first layer.

Thank You

Yes, you can directly deposit 2209 to carbon and low alloy steel because the 2209 filler metal composition is also for dissimilar metal welding. The dilution can be offset by additional weld layers over the carbon steel.

Here is a publication that I believe will help you further in understanding duplex ss.

Getting this overlay to pass A923 will require very tight process controls.
Limited dilution and maximum cooling (low heat input) will be needed.
With good control you can meet the test requirements for cast 2205 with this overlay.

Hi Mr Tunsten,,
Please see the attachment for guidelines and additional information. You may use the option of:-
-straight Duplex 2209 deposition all through
-Barrier layer of 309L followed by 2209 Duplex,at least 2 layers of 2209 deposit is recommended for composition consistency
-Barrier layer of 309LMo followed by the rest as above.

I would think for consistent chemistry option 2 or 3 would be better.

G48A test is least forgiving. You need to get the Duplex consumables tested for G48A during procurement, before welding the PQR test coupon.

Thanks.
