dynamic brake

Hi again!
Is the dynamic brake circuit (standard switch with in series a resistor limiting the maximum current) widely employed only in application where is demanded high current sinked???
I saw a schematic, for ac motor, where the switch for the dynamic brake had to carry 2A.
