Does anyone know if there are different grounding requirements for water pipes in the presence of natural gas lines (i.e. laboratory classroom) vs. no gas? Thanks.

No differences that I'm aware of. Metal water lines are usually inherently grounded since the water main is usually underground -- the water line is the best grounded piece of metal in the building.
If you have metal water lines with intervening plastic lines isolating them, you may want to provide bonding jumpers, but this has nothing to do with your question about the gas lines.
