hello - i am just a small user of sw & our dept has no one that can solve a problem we are having w/ e-drawings - we are required to make e-drawings (.erw) & save then to our network server - some of our drawings are in the range of 58,000,000 bytes - too large to save on the server - since no one here is willing to try & solve this problem i am asking for help here - i have read that many configurations in a model or toolbox parts can cause the size to grow 3 sometimes 4x the file size - also is there a way to "purge" the bad data or leftover data from a sw file like in autocad (purging in autocad gets rid of unused data within the file) - any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated - we have a couple of sw "experts"
here that just do not know why this is happening or they do not want to be botherd so they have done nothing - thank you

58MB is not that big. Why is that too large for your server?

Deleting Display States can drastically reduce SW model file size, but I don't know if they have an effect on eDrawing file size.

hello again & thank you for the reply - i am not sure why this size file is causing us problems - i was aksed if i knew why thai was happening & because i have no working knoweldge of how sw uses system resources or what the files consist of i turned to this forum for some answers - as before our "experts" just seem to be ignoring the problem - thank you

hello again - the file size of the e-drawing is too large to move onto the server for backup - it is almost 10x larger then most of the files we have - that is why i was wondefring if there was a way to purge sw files or clen them up to reduce the file size - any suggetions would be appreciated - thank you

How can it be too large to move to your server? Does it take to long to move or do your IT guys have some limits for file sizes on the server?

You are indicating a file that is only 58 megs in size. That is not a big file. Or are you talking 58 gigs?

Cheers,

hello again - no - the file size is correct - i wrote it down - the file will not write to the server at all - as far as an "it" guy - there is none - i was just asked why this file is so much larger then the others - our sw "experts" have no clue what is going on either - any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated - thank you

Without seeing the file and what it was created from, it is difficult to tell why it is so large ... but as both Anna & I have stated, 58MB is not that large a file, and any networked server should be able to handle it. What software is being used for the backup or transfer to the server.

What information can you give about the server and network?

i cannot give any info on the server - only that they keep upgrading it every 6 or so months - i am not involved w/ the server at all - the sw e-drawing is about 7-8 pages - i cannot post or upload a file due to problems it may cuase me at work - thank you

To answer your question there is no longer a compression tool to reduce your SW file sizes (built into SW). Most likely if 58MB's are to much for your servers, then you will need to reduce something in your files. If its a large assembly, then you look at reducing your amount of mates. If its a complex part, then maybe you should do less surfacing. If you have several drawings within a single file, then break them up into single files and give them a name that is understood. For example CP-135821-S1, CP-135821-S2, etc... S stands for Sheet, if you didn't get that...

With that said, I think IT department is half baked. The worlds file sizes are a lot larger today and like the people above have said 58MB is a walk in the park of a file in today's standards.

hello again & thank you for the help - i will let the users here know about breaking up drawing files into single sheets - that seems to be the way to go -
our it dept is non-existant let alone half baked - our sw "experts" really do not want to deal w/ anything anyway they just want to be left alone so
the rest of us are left pi__ing in the wind so to speak - thank you again to this forum

"58MB is a walk in the park"? You all are obviously not working across my network :)

Your company definitely has network issues... to put it in perspective, a 2GB thumb drive is $3.82 at wallmart.

Yes it does. As we are spread out all over the US, mailing those $3.82 thumbdrives back and forth is even slower than the network :)
