ECN Numbering system

In my past jobs as a configuration Management specialist, I worked with alot of different types of systems and processes. Has anyone ever known to use a drawing or document revision number or letter as there main source for an ECN numbering system? Please advise

The closest situation I can think of is a system I used to bundle related releases for the revision of a larger assembly.

We would revise the specification of the large assembly (a bus) under a 'bundle' number with separate ECNs for electrical work, seating changes, doors, etc. that would all reference the bundle number so they could be released together. The Bundle number was not specifically part of the ECN numbering although it could have been I suppose
