I am slowly trying to fill in the gaps in my electrical knowledge. Right now I'm studying 3 phase panel schedules. I understand the math and code that goes into summing up phases and load types and applying code multipliers to each load type to get total demand.

What I'm not finding a good resource for is how you estimate the KVA load on a particular circuit. For example, I'm looking at at 120/208 panel with 20/1 breakers supporting receptacles, and some show 0.72 KVA load while others show 0.36, etc. Some lighting circuits have 0.7 KVA load while others have 0.5.

My guess is that this was done by counting the number of receptacles/lights on a circuit as well as looking at what type of room is being fed. What I would love to read is a good article or white paper on how to put together this type of a load estimate.

Thanks for you help.

Look up demand factors in the National Electric Code.
