Educational Version 1

I am looking at some files here from an outside vendor. Around half of the files are showing a mortarboard logo indicating that the files were generated with an educational version of SolidWorks. I don't know how this happened. The files were generated a couple of years ago.

How does the educational version of SolidWorks work?> Am I looking at an ethical issue here?

My understanding is that if a model is created in the educational version then it will be branded as such forever. The educational version is to be used for non-commercial purposes. Basically research or learning. I usually run into this when working with a University. If it's for paid production work it should be done on commercial versions of the software.

To remove the branding the only way I know of is to recreate the part from scratch. It's not that bad since you can reference everything on the student version such as sketches and features unlike a dumb solid.

Some 10 years ago I needed to do some work on Solidworks , and the company would not pay for another seat, so I signed up as a student at a local drawing course, and bought a student version it cost #200 then. It was only good for one year, and of course any time you printed or shared it the student logo would show up. The functionality of the course was one year behind the latest edition. It enabled me to get detailing done that other designers could then copy with a professional version. You could not give work done on the student version to anybody, and if you imported a file the student flag would show up, also because it was an older version you could not view drawings done at work on the later versions, but they could see yours. Finally the company gave up and bought me a seat.
