Efficiency decrease calculation 1

I am experiencing a problem with one of our process boilers, and I'd like to calculate how our efficiency is being reduced. Upon inspection of the boiler, we found a high level of ash, covering all tubes and walls with a thin layer. Analysis of the ash was high in aluminum and silica, seeminly confirming our suspicions of FCCU catalyst carryover in our purchased #6 fuel oil. How can I use this info to work towards an efficiency calculation - hence a dollar amount that this #6 oil is costing us. Thanks for all help.

You would check the performance of the burners in light with analysis data of the fuel oil.
Based on this info, you can work out your efficiency calc from heat generated by burners (flux)over head absorbed by the fluid in the tubes.

Think of boiler efficiency as fuel economy with a car. Is there a steam meter (odometer) and oil meter (fuel gauge) on this boiler? If you don't have either one (or both) of those, you really have nowhere to start.

You will need:

- Fuel consumption over a period of time
- Stack temperatures over that period of time
- Steam production, and pressures (massflow) over the time period

- Sootblower steam usage (iff you can seperate this out)

Your calculation should be in $/lb of steam produced based on these measured values comparing one period/condition against another.
