EGT temperature vs fuel efficiency

We have done quite a bit of experimenting with mixtures, timing etc. on the twin turbo, EFI, 340 Chrysler, and one thing that we have found that appears to be true is that the EGT makes a rather marked (+150 degrees F) increase at the point that the least fuel is being used at constant speed. We are judging fuel use from injector pulsewidth and O2 correction numbers, while we vary mixture and timing.

I have not been able to find anything that says EGT temp is a good (or bad) indicator of a max economy point, and if it is a good indicator, does it apply at all speeds.

Anybody got any insight on this?
