Just in case some of you do not subscribe to the following newsletter, here is a story on an upcoming attempt to break the land speed record for an electric car. Better yet, it apparently has an(?) ABB 50HP VFD and an AC motor (you can see it in the photo), and they are going to attempt 300MPH! Even though they are competitors to many of us, let's wish them all good luck and a safe experience. This will be good PR for the entire industry.

Thanks jraef for the heads up!

I didn't have the article available when I posted the first message. It has 2x 50HP drives and motors. 100HP to go 300MPH? Great testament to the power of AC motors if you ask me.

how is the power supplied to the motors ?
batteries ? long extension cord ? diesel / gas engine ?

If you read the article you know as much as I do at this point. Maybe some ABB employees who frequent this site can fill us in?

They use Exide Technologies Orbital Technology batteries that are the latest rage cylindrical lead acid cells jammed into sorta square cases.

32 feet long.

Runs two ducted air cooled motors.

Does 0-300MPH in 102 seconds.

Thanks for the exra info.

I assume they'll be switching off the air conditioner before attempting this....

Maybe they'll just roll down the windows. A 300MPH wind can feel really cool, even in the Nevada desert.

The "winshield" is a clear bowl about 2 inches in diameter bigger than the drivers head. Looks really ummm closteraphobic. Course you could air condition that bowl with probably 100 watts.
