I have a 60HP TEFV Explosion Proof motor that we need to mount to a skid.
Behind the motor is a a Steel plate for a tank.
I know there is a minimum clearance for this, can anyone help me with what this value is, or at least a rule of thumb for it?

Never heard of such a requirement. Ask the manufacturer?

I have never thought of that requirement either but I assume you are concerned about good airflow to keep the surface temperature of the motor within requirements. It is probably in the installation manual of the motor. I know that dry type transformers list the required clearances for ventilation.

I'll make up a rule on the spot; the motor should be spaced at a minimum distance of 2X the diameter of the fan grill opening from the wall. This gives a ratio of 8 for Radial Air Flow Area to Grill Opening Area.
