Hi everyone,

I have a few basic questions as I am currently dealing a web distortion issue found in welded box girder (double overhead running):

1. Is permissible to for butt weld of girder web?
In my case, I was told butt-welding is required because bridge span is quite long.

2. Is AWS D1.1 the applicable standard? If so, what is the allowable tolerance?

3. How would one measure/determine distortion agains allowable tolerances?

OEM is currently saying the distortion is structurally acceptable.

Any input/comment you can offer would be appreciated.

There is no reason not to butt weld box girder webs. For a crane girder, you would have to use backing bars for the weld on at least one of the webs. It would be my preference to splice the webs near center span where shear is small.

Why do you conclude that the distortion is due to the welding? There may be other reasons.

What/who is OEM?
