Electrical certification for Australia-bound switchgear?

Hi Guys,

Looking at specing some switchgear bound for Australia. We have zero specs other than they want a Terasaki breaker. I know this is a fairly open-ended question, but I am looking for direction on possible certification requirements for Australia-bound low voltage switchgear.

Am I correct in presuming that I need to order IEC-compliant switchgear? Is there any other certification similar to CSA or UL that Australia follows?

Thank you!

Aussie standards generally follow IEC practice, so for low voltage gear you should be starting with:

IEC 60947 components
IEC 61439 construction
IEC/TR 61641 if it is arc resistant gear (check which of the seven criteria you have to meet)

There will be numerous other cross-referenced standards, and there may be localised variants in the AS system so I strongly recommend you obtain the country-specific versions. IEC standards aren't usually as prescriptive as North American standards and in many instances you'll have to make an interpretation to apply the standard to the real world problem.

You really need to get a proper specification from your client, for your benefit and for theirs: a detailed switchgear spec could easily run to 50 pages or more. What both you and your client have at present is an open doorway to frustration, disappointment and litigation.

C-Tick? Or is that just New Zealand?
