Is there anyone that can explain what how an ELECTRICAL GENERATOR EXCITATION SYSTEM works and the different types? (static or not).

There are many different configurations and designs of excitation systems, they could be classified as rotating, static or a combination of DC or AC power source with a rectifier.

The IEEE Stds 421.5 , 421.2 and 1110 provide good references in this topic.

Does anyone remember the small sets (15 KVA or so) with a rotating exciter and a stationary field?
