Dear all,

we have got 8MW, 11kV generator for core staggering due to the core was damaged very badly (appox 5 packets) during earth fault. So one of my colleague suggests inorganic coating like C3, C5 and C6 can be used interlamination insulation. but Iam keen to know is there any other insulation coating/varnish is best and recommended and How to use those varnsihes(like by spray or brush).

Can we use class H (temp 180degC)red varnish instead of inorganic varnishes?

Thanks in advance.

I believe C3 is organic. But as you probably know, it's not used any more... inorganic higher temperature rated C5 and C6 are standard.

Years ago I tour of a facility that manufactured laminations and applied the coatings. I don't remember all the steps, but the coating process seemed very refined to me. Not some guy with a paintbrush, but many carefully planned / controlled / automated steps. My general impression is that it is better left to people who do that sort of thing for a living (even if you are not ordering new lams, you can probably get them to recoat your existing lams). Especially if you have enough time and large number of laminations involved. But I could be wrong...

Maybe edison or DArsonval or one of the other motor shop guys will chime in.
