I have an elevator machine room elevated above the penthouse floor. The machine room contains the elevator controller, therefore I have shown the disconnect located next to the elevator controller to meet the National Electric Code requirement for the disconnect to be within site of the elevator controller. There is no door into the elevated platform, only a set of stairs that goes down to the penthouse floor. However, it appears the elevator code ASME/ANSI 17.1 requries the disconnect to be on the strike side of the entrance door to the machine room. The elevator contractor says an additional disconnect is required next to the entrance door of the penthouse to meet the ASME/ANSI requirement. Is this true? Could having two disconnects in series be a violation of the NEC which requires one disconnect to remove power from all ungrounded conductors for elevators?
