Ellipsoidal Access Opening in ASME VIII Container 1

Hi,

I have an ASME "U" Stamp beverage container that contains an Access Opening centered at the top dome. This dome is an ASME F&D shape that we stamp in-house. We then take this dome and punch/extrude an elliptical* shape that is used as the Access Opening. This Opening is about 3.40" minor Ø x 3.90" major Ø x ~7/16" tall .

I am using code software to Calculate the required minimum thickness of this opening and the software references UG-45 (DesignCalcs). My material thickness is 14GA or (0.075") nominal. UG-45 appears to require 0.0625" minimum thickness.

My code guy (AI) is asking me to calculate both the minor and major diameter of this opening, however my software only asks for one diameter (“ ... Access Opening: ... select an option (other than "None") from the drop-down menu. This will give relief from the UG-45(b) nozzle neck thickness calculations. Selecting "Elliptical Manway" will not change the calculations to reflect an elliptical neck ...” . My software is also asking for weld information, ie, weld size and type (currently using UW-16(d) ).

Please provide any advice or experience on how to calculate an Access Opening that is Elliptical* non-welded formed/extruded shape.

I may be going down the wrong path here but this is the direction that my AI is pointing me. Thank you !

Ian Abblett when you say "calculate" which calculation(s) are you interested in exactly? UG-37? UG-45? Other?

Not sure of your exact construction but could UG-38 apply?

Lastly, software is just software, it (hopefully) does only what is was written to do. You may have to whip up a spreadsheet or something to meet your need.

Regards,

Mike

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand

Not sure of the exact item you're after, but normally, an elliptical neck is just treated as a cylindrical neck of the major diameter. IE, for calculating required wall thickness and reinforcing areas.
