How do I design an elliptical manhole per asme section I? Can anybody send me or indicate where can I find drawings or pictures of this type of configuration?

Thanks in advance.

If you are asking how to design an opening in a pressure vessel for an elliptical manway then refer to UG-36. You will also need to check spacing relative to other openings per UG-42 as well as do reinforcement calculations per UG-37. If it is a large opening you will also have to include 1-7 calculations from the mandatory appendix.

At the PV course I went to a while back, they calculated required neck thickness as if the neck were round, with diameter equal to the width in the cross-section of interest. That is the part that is not obvious in the Code.

A couple of references for you - discusses some of the design considerations, and and are from suppliers. I haven't been involved with boilers for some time, so not sure who the main players are with manways. If you are designing from scratch, then it's best to stay with a "standard" size for the sake of the gaskets.

John

Since you are concerned about power boiler (ASME section I), you should get a current copy and read the pertinent sections PG-32 thru PG-44 for manhole design. You should also be proficient at calculating lmits of compensation.
Standard elliptical manhole openings are 12x16 and 11x15. Obviously, you can have non-standard types but the code states the standard types as the minimum openings.

Thank you guys.

I'm thinking of using an elliptical flanged-in manhole. I posted a new topic related to this in the same forum. Please, take a look there and see if you can help me.

Best regards.
