Gentlemen- What has been your experience on acceptability by U-Stamp certificate holders and also by Authorized Code Inspectors of an elliptical manway supplied under UG-11 for an ASME Section VIII, Div. 1 component. Specifically for the cover and the ring can be easily calculated to meet Code.

UG-11 (2015 Edition) states that the manufacturer of the vessel is responsible for the suitability of the design in meeting the rules of the Code.

1. Is certification by the elliptical manway supplier adequate for pressure and temperature rating to satisfy Code rules?

2. Is the elliptical manyway supplier responsible for providing the method used including backup documentation that the manway cover meets the requirements of the Code?

3. If the elliptical manway supplier wled an no pressure retaining clip to the manway cover does he have to provide certification that the welding procedure qualification and the welders themself are qualified per ASME Section IX?

4. Is anyone aware of any suppliers who can provide an ASME Code Section I, IV, or VIII, DIv. 1 stamped and certified as "PART" elliptical manway?

Yes, you can get what you are after. Just google elliptical manway ASME and many suppliers will surface.

Nicletkid - I have contacted several suppliers of elliptical manways - none yet have been able to provide me the backup documentation (calculations or test reports) that support compliance with an ASME Code requirements for design certification.

Do you have the name of an ASME Code stamp holder who provides elliptical manways?

A year or two ago we had a Reactor with Elliptical manway. The fabricator that made it was in Syracuse, NY and I cannot remember their name to save my life, but bid the work and was very helpful and detail oriented. Unfortunately the project did not believe they should get paid for their technical knowledge, but they may be able to steer you to a reliable supplier.

nickelkid - thanks, I'll check it out

Commercial Metal Forming in Calif. can/will make you what you need. 714 532-6321

FYI 1)Elliptical man ways & hand holes have been acceptable for years to Section I & VIII A.I.'s.
2)U stamping and Partial Data Reports are not necessary for assemblies certified to UG/PG-11.
3) A certificate of conformance from the manufacturer is required and all that is required by Code. It should state that welding was performed by qualified welders to qualified procedures etc., etc., etc...
4) The Code does not have calculations for the pressure ratings for these parts, so the MAWP is determined by UG-101 proof test.
5) CMF listed above can provide a Partial & Stamping but it is un-necessary per Code, however we know the customer is always right even if they are wrong.

You can also contact Clark Kennedy in Toronto, Canada.
They have the certifications you need.

Thanks to all of you for your help. I followed your recommendations and insight and was able to obtain what i wanted and to provide what the Authorized Inspector and client wanted.
