I've come across the attached formula for an embedded post, and, in none of the literature, including codes does it reference the source of the formula. Can anyone advise me of the source?

Pretty sure a simplified adaptation elastic poles in elastic soil from Davisson. 1960s.
If you want to do better, LPile is a not-too-expensive solution. Very primitive user interface, but very good database of soils & behavior for laterally loaded piles (I think from UTexas).

I found two of the equations in Patterson's "Pole Building Design" c.1969 on pages 42 and 43, but the 2nd equation for d looks noticeably different.

The publication is available on SlideRuleEra's website:

Thanks IRS... for some reason, the 'star machine' is not working... I'll try again later. Maybe another formula to add to the mix...

I like to keep a 'running' file on methods and will print out several approaches and generally select the max value, unless it appears to be way out of reach... just like 'doing stuff'.

You will alsö find these equations in the AITC. They have been around for years. They are iterative in nature in that initially you have to assume a "d" to generate the "S" value. To work, the d you assume has to be greater than or equal to the d you compute.

Top formula is for a no-slab condition, and the bottom is for a slab present. The "S" values are different between the two cases, as are the formulas.

I have an old publication at work that has there equations too. I'll take a look tomorrow.

I'm just consolidating a bunch of post embedments into an SMath Studio file... It will give me a few parameters that I can decide which is the best... usually the greatest embedment.

Dik:

My publications are from the Wyckoff Company, and the American Wood Preservers Institute, both around 1969.

Same formulas...
