Emergency Diesel Generator Tank Piping

Hi,
I need help on piping design from a 500 gal storage tank to the Gen-Set both sitting on same concrete pad about 20 feet apart. Should piping be underground or above ground. What should be the pipe schd. and what type valves should be used. Location is in the Texas panhandle.

I have read your comments to other questions and I have great respect for your knowledge. I am an ME, and I need to learn how to do this. I just needed some preliminary design parameters to get started. Are there any resources to show examples of this sort of piping?

This website has quite a lot of info on fuel supply. If you poke around here, you just might find what you need.

This one lists some typical design standards associated with fuel supplies,

For an emergency genr. approx 1000 hp, a 1" sch 40 pipe supply should be sufficient. The outlet connection should be above the tank bottom by about 6", to avoid picking up sediment /water. You will require a form of quick closing/remote shut -off valve at the tank outlet. Valves can be ss ball valves or bronze gate valve. You will also require a fuel spillback/return from your engine fuel pump system. The spill back may require a cooling system if ambient temperatures are high.
Most of this info can be found in the engine mfrs literature.
