EMI shielding in Space

Hi all,

I would like to know more about EMI Shielding.
- What are the main parameters of an electromagnetic wave (frequency/wave length, ...)?

- What are the typical EM waves received by a space satellite?

- How to calculate the thickness of the shielding?

- The perimeters of holes in the shielding must be much smaller than the wave length, what is the order of magnitude of this difference?

All good questions, but you should consult a qualified engineer or a good textbook. This is not something to decribe in this type of forum. "Space Mission Analysis and Design" would be a good starting point

here's a link to a cutoff waveguide calculator. It'll at least show you the size of a hole/square hole that starts to limit the frequencies.


The rf loss thru a hole in a metal structure is greater if the hole has a metal tube attached to it.
