EN 13480-5, PNEUMATIC TESTING. 1

Anybody please clarify that the interpretation of standards at which EN 13480-5, Metallic industrial piping as below ;

9.3.3 Pneumatic pressure test

e) metal temperature at which shall be at least 25 'C above the brittle fracture temperature required in EN 13480-2:2002, Annex B for piping system. Attention is drawn to the fact that if the gas pressure is reduced to the piping system under test from high pressure storage, its temperaature will fall. Therefore the equipment provided by the piping systems manufacturer shall be such that the temperature of the gas entering the piping systems exceeds the minimum temperature indicated.


For instance, manufacturer shall be performed the pneumatic testing for piping system due to contamination inside pipe during winter season.

My question, what if metal temperature below 25'C ?

Manufacturer couldn't proceed the pneumatic testing until metal temperature up to 25'C above ?

Hello MG79,
My interpretation to the standard is:
- first, pneumatic test is only permitted when hydrostatic test is detrimental or is not practical,
- second, the 25C is not exactly 25C, but it's 25C above brittle fracture temp.

In this case, you can't do pneumatic test when the metal and gas entering the piping system at temperature below 25C of the brittle-temp-of-metal.
