"Object Snap" does not need to be activated. It should be active automatically.
Read "Inferencing Pointers & Lines" in the "Sketch" section of the Help files.
Do you have the "Selection Filter" toolbar showing? Does it have an active selection? If so deselect all filters by clicking on the single funnel shape at the top or left of the toolbar.
Hope this helps.

Joyric,
To my knowledge, SolidWorks does not 'snap'. However, your cursor, as it moves over endpoints (centerpoints?) and other entities changes from an arrow to different symbols depending on what type of entity your cursor is hovering over. I would guess that if you used 'Help' to find 'cursor', there may be an explanation of the symbols there.

The above is correct. The only other way to snap is to use a grid and have snap to points turned on.

Partially true. If you have you options set correctly, when the cusor changes to the ,say, end point symbol, when it is that dirty orange color your select click should give you a coincident relationship - which is really what you are looking for. I am not sure that midpoints of edges change color.

Tools - Options - System Options - Sketch - Infer From Model must be on.

Actually you can have a "Osnap" in SolidWorks IF YOU WANT to... if you go to the tools add-ins you can activate the "SolidWorks2-D Emulator" which will open a command line on the bottom that looks very much like the old AutoCAD interface, the cursor will also change to look like the crosshairs of the old autocad tool.

But the real deal is this... Solidworks has "object snap" on all the time.. but the difference is that it does not "Snap" to the point like the Osnap would in Acad. Instead what SolidWorks offers you is feedback.. pay attention to the cursor when you hover your mouse over the different entities in a sketch. A dot means that you are coincident with a point or vertex, a line with a dot in the middle means "midpoint", and there are others. To read more on this, see the help menu index under pointers/relations

But after reading that if you still want to activate the Osnap you simply turn on the add-in and when in a sketch type osnap in the command line area and hit enter Soldiworks will return with "Object Snap Mode:" at which you simply type in the snaps you would like to have. for example lets say we want endpoint, midpoint, and center snaps turned on. At the command prompt we would type the following...

Command: osnap
Object Snap Mode: cen,mid,end

For more information, turn the add-in on for the solidworks 2d emulator under Tools/Add-ins and then go to the Help menu and select 2D Command Emulator Help menu...

hope that helps
Jon

That 2D emulator is nice I guess for those that want that type of emulation. But I have found that add-in will and might cause you to have more crashes and problems later. I had a customer using the emulator and he crashed all the time. We turned that off and his problem went away.

I'm just posting this so you are aware that you might have trouble using that 2D Emulator.

Personally I cant stand it!

But if he feels he needs it... its there! Like I was saying though once he gets used to the cursor feedback he will not have to worry about such things!

The emulator is a crutch for people who used to use AUTOCAD and are afraid of learning the new interface - basically a marketing tool. Avoid it like the plague. Whenever you use an emulator in any software package you are getting nothing really new in capability - just a different interface interpreting the commands to look-alike something else. In other words the lowest common denominator. So since you are not getting anything really new, just learn how the new system does it in native form and go with it.

APPENG did a much better job than me in describing SW method for "snap". And he is right - the cursor does not change, it sprouts a symbol next to it to indicate what you are near. In models it also highights the entity. In sketches if you are near the sysmbol is white and if you are on it close enough for the select to give a relationship it turns orange. I like it a lot more than having the cursor or sketch goemetry jumping to the nearest "snap". also it is automatic - you don't have to enable or disable it. Take a little getting used to but it very efficient. Not also the model inferences in sketches when you create lines, say off existing one - the dotted inferences that show up let you make things perpendicular , etc. automatically, plus find things choose to be in line with horizontally or vertically. Make a few cheap simple parts and play with it for ahalf an hour.
