I am going to produce a model of 'engine warm up characteristics'but am unsure where the best place would be to start. I am aiming to consider things like:

Pumping losses of cold oil.
Increase friction in cold engines.
Calculations of how heat from combustion chamber effects the oil and water. etc

I would be interested to hear from anyone who as any good suggestions on:

Other things to consider.
Any good reading material (books/web sites/ papers etc).
Any models currently available for comparison.

Hope you can be of assistance, thanking you in anticipation.

A fairly complex problem. A great book on IC engines is "Internal Combustion Engine Fundamentals" by John Heywood of MIT... In my opinion, the bible of IC engines. You can easily get correlations for warm engine friction as a function of engine speed. I think that is explained in Heywood. As far as the other stuff, I would search SAE papers ( for related work already published. You are likely to find papers giving friction = f (coolant temp, oil temp), etc.

Good luck!
