I've recently started getting involved with the front end design process in providing customers with conceptual or feasibility designs to help them conceptualize project as well as determine high level budgetary cost for project.
In doing some research I found that there is a standard industry approach to this process typically referred to as FEED or FEL design. I've also seen that there are different stages of this front end design process FEL-1, FEL-2...which incorporate different deliverables and levels of details related to design drawings and cost estimating.
I am interested to hear from others with experience with this front end process on the typical approach or summary of differentiation between the different FEED/FEL design stages.
Is FEED generally the same as FEL or are they two different steps in process? As a consultant do you typically provide this service on a T&M basis not knowing the parameters of design scope at onset of design?
