Please advise me about the ASTM equivalent material of China Standard (GB 6654 16MnR).

I used to think that the steel is equivalent to ASTM A516 Gr. 70. However, after comparison of the yield strength value, it seems that 16MnR has higher yield strength than A516-70.

What are the composition and mechanical property limits for the China standard GN 6654 16MnR?

I found a composition listed for 16MnR:

Pressure vessel carbon steel and low content alloy GB 6654 16MnR Chemical composition:
0.20% C, 0.20-0.60 Si, 1.20-1.60 Mn, 0.035 P, 0.035 S, 0.030 Cr, 0.030 Ni, 0.030 Cu. [probably max. except Si & Mn]

The C is too low & the Mn too high for ASTM A516 Grade 70 (nearer Grade 55).

GB 6654-1996 Steel plates for pressure vessels (TEXT OF DOCUMENT IS IN CHINESE) can be purchased for $12 at

Wow, even their standards cost less! We should all start buying Chinese standards and ditch ASTM and SAE. Another cost reduction opportunity for corporate America...

Chinese material standards--coming soon to your local Walmart book dept.

kenvlach,
Thanks for the comment. The minimum yield strength of A516 Gr.55 is only 205 MPa. Yield strength of 16MnR is at least 305 MPa. I believe that the allowable stress for 16MnR will be also higher than A516 Gr. 55.

I will try to ask my Chinese friend to advise about the allowable stress table value for this material.
