ESD Actuation

Hello all,

Looking for some ideas on an issue with some ESD valves and their actuation in an O&G application. The current set up is using fuel gas for pneumatic actuation. The owners want to get away from that as it allows debris and other elements into the actuator and greatly reduces the reliability.

Looking at a Class 1, Div 2 explosion-proof electric actuator with high torque capabilities but we are running into issues there due to the fact that this location runs on solar panels and a battery bank. This is limiting what we can do with electric actuators. Have looked at step down transformers but this adds elements and cost.

The current valves are class 2500, 2" 1/4 turn ball valves. We are thinking of bumping the valve down to a class 900 or 1500 to get to lower torque requirements for the actuator.

Thoughts? I am new to this field and from what I hear ESD situations can become complex. Thanks in advance!

In these sorts of situations I usually aim for a solar powered hydraulic system such that a small pump slowly pumps up a hydraulic accumulator good for two or three actuations minimum.

There are many such self contained wellhead systems which do this as a packaged unit.

Hydraulic then works similar to pneumatic in holding back a spring and then just dumping fluid back to a reservoir.

Things like this
