Estimating Engineering Time 2

I am looking for some standards on cal. the amount of time to perform engineering work. This Work is being on barges which will include all piping systems. I am looking for some ideas to know how to estimate the amount of time it would take to perform all of the engineering work including a complete detailing package.

Hummmmmmmm, this in known as estimating a job, and depends of the number of people involved, the capabilities of these people, other workload issues......and most importantly, the ssope of work and the clarity of the scope of work.

Add a few more not-so-minor factors to this - business factors such as how busy your workforce is, who's the competition, etc.

I don't think a simple standard will ever work, unles that is you've already restrained the issue quite a bit by industry and perhaps even customer.

Thanks mshimko for your views on this subject. What I am looking for is some ideas of what standards other people in this industry is using. My problem is that I am in disagreement with our estimating department about how much time it should take to preform a task within our engineering group. I was hoping for some guiding to be able to give to our estimating department to show that is takes more time to perform all of the engineering to fully detail all of the package. Any help to where I can find something would be gratefull. Maybe eng. hrs per ton of steel or eng. hrs per bbl.. Just something to help me justify the time we are using to complete the detailing package.

What are your estimators using? Have you no historical data?

Etracker, If your company is trying to have your department perform some task in an unreasonable time frame, have an outside contractor quote the work. If they can meet the time and scope of work, consider using their service; if they prove you correct, use their quotation as ammo with the estimators.

Unfortunataley there is no substitute for experience when estimating. You would have to provide significantly more detail for valuable feedback.

I am just a 3rd year cadet and 41 years old so if my info is not what you are after, sorry.
We are being taught that we have 2 bosses.
First:is the Department of Transport. The ones that hold our tickets.
Second:The one that currently signs out pay cheques.
Better to go by the wording of the Department of Transport documents and make sure everything is ship shape.
Its a legal and a moral dilemma when the piping has to be rushed. I agree with "rlzpenny".
