Choice of welding process is best left to the fabricator. Apart from, amongst other things, complying with the applicable code and specifications, economics plays a role.

FYI, ESW is mostly used for joining heavy sections made of carbon steel > 3/4 in.

There are numerous publications on welding processes that deal with advantages and limitations of processes.

If you have more specific questions, please consider posting in either the Welding, Bonding and Fasterner Engineering forum or the AWS (welding) Code Issues forum.
