My state has instituted a new policy that you must have 4 hours of "ethics" training every two years to retain your PE. They are really vauge about what "ethics training" is.

Anyone have any ideas where someone would get 4 hours of ethics training? At the ASME World Congress there was exactly 1 hour on ethics. The SPE ATCE had zero.

zdas04,

I think I may be licensed in your state...same rule. I "conquered" it by using an at home study course in ethics....found here:

PDH at home link

Fairly easy and provides enough hours. If you can't find it on there - repost here and I'll look up the exact course I took from them.

In Texas, reading through the latest version of the laws and rules is enough to get the required 1 hr of training. If the requirement is vague, then self study is probably fine. I would suggest the book "Street Smart Ethics: Succeeding in Business Without Selling Your Soul" by Clinton McLemore.

Ditto sms on reading the laws and rules. Self-study should be acceptable. In case of doubt, contact your insurance carrier. Ours put on a seminar for us, and we got 2 hours of ethics credit. And they should be only too happy to help out.

In New Mexico when they added the 4 hours of ethics they put a cap of 10 hours on self study. Since 4 is less than 10 (damn, I got to use my math skills) and ethics courses in cool places seem to be in short supply I guess I'll look into the on-line stuff. I'd rather go to Aspen.

Fortunately, you only need 2 hours of ethics if you're renewing this December. The 4 hour requirement will go into effect for odd-numbered licensees renewing in December of 07.

Why not simply claim 4 hours of self-study in ethics rather than taking the time to read something on it?

Because it wouldn't be ethical. (I just couldn't resist).

By the same token, the ethics portion of the PE exam is take-home...

Anyway, I've gotten self-study credit for reading the material on this site:

I am faced with coming up with some ethics hours for my license renewal which won't be a problem because of some sessions that my company put on.

But lacking those, (which won't recur in the future) and noting that ethics has dwindled down to going to an Internet site and taking a self test (got the site references from my licensing board) I think that spending time in this forum should count. I guarantee I get better ethics information and training than I got from the 'canned' sites I was sent to.

If you are participating in an online discussion of ethics, it should count for your PDH. You just need to make sure that you spend the requisite time here reading and participating, and that time needs to be documented.

Since the boards will assume we are ethical, that is all that is required in many states.

I can visualize submitting a piece on ethics, whether theoretical or actual case study. This will demonstrate willingness to improve yourself and spread the good word.

An actual case study would be instructive to others. My favorite is when I was working in plant engineering. Our top boss spread favors among the middle/top mgt. Home improvement jobs were written off by construction accounts in plant engineering. One manager clearly proclaimed he wanted no part of this; he could hire his own contractors. The word got around, and the top guy got his tit in a wringer. He was on the street, and the plant got a top to bottom critical review by HQ.

I brought this up at another job, and one guy said that when he worked at a power plant, the plant mgr really took advantage. He had a metal building delivered to his home and installed by plant personnel. CAN YOU TOP THIS?
