Not very technical, but very international. We always get AmEx gift cards for our granddaughters in Colorado for birthday's (teenagers, who can keep up with what the might want?). They are moving to Italy next month and AmEx cards only work in the U.S. Anyone have any ideas on how to get gift cards that work with the merchants in Northern Italy?

Just went through this. The short is yes, International Visa Gift Cards are available and some may be sent online.

You can also purchase virtual pre-paid Visa gift cards from a company like Rybbon. You can then send international Visa gift cards by email.

Why not a birthday card followed with a bank transfer to their account - this is what I do for my daughter and grandkids.

Artisti,
There is a branch of Bank of America on post, this is looking like the best option, but the Patriot Act makes it impossible for them to set up the kids accounts from the states so it all has to wait until they get there.

No sure how American Bank system works, can they set up an Italian bank accounts and transfer to them. I transfer money to/from Thai/Aussie banks, easy quick - nominal charges.

David,
If you want to send currency to Europe or vice versa, there is a company called Tranferwise they do transfers which do not involve sending the money overseas.
Their model is, say you get paid in dollars but you are working in Italy and want euros, they will take your dollars and give them to somebody who is paid in euros but wants dollars, then take their euros and give them to you. You have to have a bank account they can draw from and a bank account to pay to, and it takes 3 or 4 days , BUT the commissions are only 3 or 4 % and the exchange rate is always the mid rate , not the discounted rate the bank sticks you with.
