I'm in the middle of a discussion (read arguement) over the proper way to disconnect 220vac 1ph, in an electrical panel I'm designing to be installed in Italy. 220vac 1ph is being brought into my panel, which after going through a branch circuit protector, will be distributed to a series of dc power supplies. My question is, should I use a 2pole or single pole breaker for each of the power supplies? I'm thinking I need a 2pole breaker, but the other engineer believes I only need a single pole breaker. Won't I still have a potential of 110vac on the other leg if I only break one line of the 220? Could someone also point me to a place where I can find this info for myself?

Thanks,

Doug Greig

u do need a 2 pole breaker
we had a similar application and we had to use a 2 pole breaker

You may want to post this at:

There are a lot of regional variations, but European electrical service is typically about 400Y/230 volts, with 2-wire 230V circuits containing a grounded-neutral conductor. A 1-pole breaker may suffice, but that's subject to local codes, so only a guess.

Thanks for the responses and the link to the website. I guess for now we are going with a single pole breaker. But on the next panel that I will be repsonsible for I'm going to use 2 pole breakers.

Thanks Again.

Do you have two phases, or one phase and a neutral? All ungrounded(non-neutral) conductors should be opened together.

Suggestion: If not overruled by local laws, rules and regulations, then the 220V single phase voltage system is supposed to have one circuit breaker, if the neutral is grounded (it may be dangerous to open the grounded neutral by the two pole circuit breaker, one pole for neutral and one pole for phase conductor), and if the neutral is ungrounded, then definitely a two-pole circuit breaker is mandatory.

why is opening grounded neutral with a pole breaker dangerous
