According to ASME sec 8 div 2 paragraph 7.4.2.2.b.1, an examination group shall be applied for all welds within a section. Now, with reference to table 7.2 it is seen that some examinations are N/A for some welds (for example circumferential joint on a nozzle with weld type 2 or 3, d>150 & t>16 for group 1a). Which one does it mean?
1. This type of joint shall not be used for this group of examination. If it is the case, how can we design a nozzle in the stated example using the examination category 1a?!
2. This type of joint can be used but there is no need for an examination. If it is the case, is it not strange that no examination is needed for category 1a for the stated example but some examination is needed for category 3b?
Any point in this regard is appreciated.
