How can I convert Excel files into dwg files, so that I can use the drawing rather than it being an un-explodeable block??????

There are several shareware lisp programs available for this purpose, one of which is "ctext". To use this you need to save the excel file as a formatted "prn" file, rename the file as a ".txt" file prior to importing it into autocad using "ctext".
This lisp file lays the text file out in autocad as text in the layout it would print in. You will need to edit the text to realign it into columns if required.
The file can be found at: under the file name: "ctext.zip".

Another way to do this is to highlight all of the cells insid the excel file and copy to the clipboard. Next paste the file into autocad,once pasted select the object and then cut. Now select paste special and insert as autocad entity. you will now have your excel file in dwg format with all of the text intact. I tried it out it works great.

"When an Excel spreadsheet is pasted, the Picture (metafile) format is used, which can result in the spreadsheet being truncated. This problem can occur when the column width and row height in Excel are set to the default (default width is 8.43, and default height is 12.75), and the pasted object exceeds 18 columns by 70 rows.
Use one or both of these methods to resolve the problem:
Method #1
In Excel, reduce the column width and row height. You can paste more of the spreadsheet if you reduce the column width and row height.
Method #2
Paste the spreadsheet in separate parts. By pasting the spreadsheet in separate parts you can break it down into several smaller OLE objects."
