Has anyone seen, or does anyone have, a video showing spark test results useful to identify carbon steel, cast iron, nodular iron, low alloy steel, etc?
Even if the test needs to be done in a dark room or under some specified conditions, perhaps with a particular grinding wheel.

Maybe superb color photos would work.

The immediate intent is to ID materials for weld repairs. Cast steel, cast iron, ductile/nodular iron.

thanks,

Dan T

You don't need color, how long are the spark? how many are there? do they sparkle or just fade?
These can be addressed using B&W sketches, and will tell you what you need to know.
The color is highly subjective and often a artifact of the viewing conditions.

I would not recommend spark testing to ID material for weld repairs, period. If I was sorting scrap maybe but that is it.
