Hi,

Can a shell and tube heat exchanger below duty of 200,000 BTU/hr used to heat water to 75ºC with high temperature steam be exempted from ASME code requirements?

Thanks,
Mehak

So you want to exempt the hot water side of the heat exchanger? Are you going to treat the steam side as a pressure vessel (assuming it is over 15 psig design pressure?)? I'm going to leave the question whether a heat exchanger is covered by section U-1(c)(2)(f) to the folks who are more knowledgeable.

Does the hot water side of the heat exchanger design temperature and pressure meet the requirements of this section? Even if this is not considered a pressure vessel under this section, is tube rupture something you need to protect against? I would also want to check with the government or state regulatory people if that applies in your location.
