Can anyone tell me where I could find in depth information on the workings,design and manufacture of exhaust systems ie manifolds, cat converters and mufflers(silencers)

Most of the information you require is in a book called Scientific design of exhaust and intake systems. It's published by Robert Bentley (

and it's ISBN number is 0-8376-0309-9. This is the number for the book in the UK. I have no idea what it is elsewhere. Hope this helps.
