Existing utility beneath pile cap

Hi buddy,

As shown in the picture below, I am wondering if I still need to consider the stress on existing utility by pile cap even though the pile is supported by end bearing bored pile on rock. By assumption, there should be no load transferring to the utility. But In reality, the pile cap will deflect and induce stress on the soil/binding beneath.

Thanks

If the pile cap is very stiff, as all pile caps should be, you need not worry. But if you do, just provide some compressible material above the pipe.

If the ground is subject to frost wouldn't you have compressible insulation under any structural on-grade element? Must be from the South! But I concur with Hokie, place some compressible insulation (cheap stuff) and call it a day.

If the pipe is flexible no need to concern.. The piles are end bearing type and the pile cap should not deflect which will affect the pipe . If you have concern, you may provide some space above the pipe ( with styropor etc..)

However, what will be your option for repair and fix of the utility line in case of necessary ?. The common rule is, detour of the utility lines prior to piling works start.

If a pile cap’s deflecting that much you’ve got bigger problems!

I can’t say I’d be overly concerned. Caps are generally very stiff.
