Expansion Bolt vs Anchor Bolt,

Hi, what is the difference between expansion bolts and anchor bolts? Both to be put after (drilling) because there is already existing concrete.

In the plan above. It specifies expansion bolts. I plan to get the Hilti anchor bolts because of tested specs. Are their anchor bolts also considered expansion bolts (it expands at the ends)?

Also for application like it.. do you recommend chemical bolts? In your experience, what is the best Hilti model for it?

Expansion anchors (bolt) are a type of anchor bolt. Adhesive (chemical) anchors are not expansion bolts. In my area, Hilti's Kwik Bolt TZ (KB-TZ) is a commonly specified expansion anchor. It appears that you are using post-installed anchors to anchor a column in place. If you don't know that an expansion bolt is also considered a form of an anchor bolt, then I question your ability to evaluate this application. The depth of embedment is critical as are the edge distances and spacing of the anchors, as well as the strength of the concrete. All have to be taken into consideration. Adhesive anchors can have similar load resistance to expansion anchors; however, they are very susceptible to temperature at the time of installation and during the cure period. If you are in an area that has cold temperatures, I would stay away from adhesive anchors.

While it is good to get advice from a forum such as this, you are asking for a selection of bolt type without letting us know the loads, the temperature conditions, the concrete strength and equally important, the experience level of the installers.

An anchor is a general term used to fasten to concrete.

An expansion bolt is a torque-controlled fastener. It screws into an insert that expands. Hilti Kwik Bolt TZ are common.

An epoxy adhesive anchor, or chemical, is basically glued to the concrete. Hilti HIT-HY 200 is common.

As for the anchor that you select, point it out to your reviewer.

The anchor bolt won't be used on a column. But on central support of rafters that is size w8x21 (vertical support is same size). See

It's written anchor bolts. Designer gave and said no specific spec but just 16mm anchor bolts. So I wonder if I can use the Hilti mechanical bolts. Which model do you usually use on this central support application (that is not column)?

Why not request clarification from the designer. What criteria led them to require 6 - 16mm anchors. They must've been designing using some product as a baseline

Did original design assume cast in place headed AB maybe? ask for clarification. If you assume and implement, you will be wrong 100% of the time.
