The standard states that the sample be compacted in the mold, trimmed, and returned with porous disks. We've always performed the compaction in the empty mold (no disks) and trimmed off a fair amount of excess soil from the bottom and tried to limit excess on top. AMRL has never indicated that this is in error.

I was hoping that others would confirm similar practice as having the bottom disk in place would result in a denser specimen at a correspondingly lower moisture to conform to saturation, which would produce a higher swell.

Thanks in advance,
Chuck
