Dear Mr.

In ASME ,Mandatory Apendix 5 ,"Flanged and Flued or Flanged only Expansion Joints" clause 5-4(f) says that
Nozzles, backing strips, clips,or other attachments shall not be located in highly stressed areas of the expasion joint , i.e., inner torus, annular plate and outer torus.

We are designing a heat exchanger which have 3 expansion joints. Due to the 3 joint in line, in any case, baffle plate be located in joint and flow by pass could not stop without sleeve which should be welded to inner torus .

Any body have an idea to stop flow by pass and satisfy ASME
requirment.

Waiting your good advice with thanks.

Sounds like you need a bellows to me.

You don't really have much choice but to weld the sleeve to the inner annulur radius if you are going to stop by-pass. What are you doing to vent and drain these joints and meet the Code? Put a long sleeve between each F & F head?

Unfortunately this is one of those cases where strictly following the Code yields an unusable design.

Not much to offer,

Mike
