Hello everybody,
when an aluminium ring (OD 100mm, ID 90mm) is heated up from lets say room temp to 200°C it increases its diameters. But, what happens if this very aluminium ring is pressed into an other ring which has a much lower thermal expansion coefficient? Will the ID of the aluminium ring by itself and pressed into another part be the same at the same temp?

Easy question but can not figure out the answer.

regards,
Catho

This is not an easy question, because there are several different things that may occur, e.g. plastic deformation of one or more of the pieces in question. The ID of the Al ring will not be the same if it is pressed into another part (steel, etc.) and heated to 200 C. It will be less, but how much less depends considerably on details like amount of press fit, surface roughness & material ratio (bearing ratio), strength of the Al & other part, etc.
