I'm about to graduate with my M.S. Civil Engineering (Structural) I currently have a B.S. Civil Engineering and have passed the FE exam. I'm young and I'd like to live outside the US for a few years an am willing to go anywhere.

What country has the best expat opportunities for structural engineers with these qualifications?

Anyone here have any experience with this that cares to share there thoughts on this?

What websites would be a good starting point for a job search?

Do you feel the best opportunities for structural engineers exist in the US or abroad? and if so where?

Asia has the great growth rate, so it would probably have the greatest demand. However some of the smaller mining countries require educated engineers.

Im based in the Middle East (Qatar) and have been for 4 years now. There is more growth in this area than anywhere else in the world currently and with the huge investment in infrastructure and facilities underway and forthcoming there are huge career opportunities here, nearly all of which are very well renumerated too!

I cant say how succesful an applicant with little or no industrial experience would be however I myself had only 4 years exp when i came here and i do no of a couple of other western engineers who came to Qatar staright from university, so its definitely possible.

nothign is impossible and those prepared to take a gamble in the current market are the only ones who will move forward............

charnott, thanks for your story. How did you go about finding that job? Any website in particular you used, or did you have a contact you knew?

I was registered witha couple of UK recruitment websites and when i began showing an interest on the websites i obviously set off whatever alarm system these things have and started getting calls from recruiters. I had some experience in Qatar whilsti was at university so when they had a role in my field in Qatar I got the call. My second job out here was setup due to contacts i made during my first two years here, its very ,m much not what you know but who!

if your interested in the Gulf/middle east region then GulfTalent.com is very good for construction/engineering roles in the region, i have had several offers form being registered there including one last month for a role in New Zealand (not sure how that works!). Bayt.com also appears to be pretty active but ive not had much experience with that.

alternatively look at US companies that operate overseas, you may find it easier to get work from an employer who understands your background.

All the best

Australia!! They need all kinds of help - not sure why. Just read it in a magazine recently.

Because we are digging stuff out of the ground as fast as possible. The taxes on that are funding various large unwise makework projects around the country, which we don't have the skilled workers for. So a makework project results in importing labour. Brilliant eh?

Cheers
