Expected accuracy of documents ISSUED FOR CONSTRUCTION 1

I AM A RESIDENT ENGINEER FOR A BROWNFIELD CONTRUCTION PROJECT FOR SEVERAL CRUDE OIL PUMPING STATIONS. OUR CLIENT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DETAILLED ENGINEERING AND ISSUING ALL PLANS AND NECESSARY DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED FOR CONSTRUCTION.

I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT IS CONSIDERED AN ACCEPTABLE LEVEL OF INACCURACY FOR DOCUMENTATION ISSUED FOR CONSTRUCTION (i.e. 5-10%?). WHAT PERCENTAGE OF DOCUMENTS / DRAWINGS ISSUED FOR CONSTRUCTION WOULD NORMALLY UNDERGO MODIFICATION DURING CONSTRUCTION DUE TO ERRORS OR OMISSIONS?

I don't know of any level of acceptable errors and omissions. A properly checked drawing should have no errors or omissions, but no one is perfect.

Issued for construction gives the contractor authority to build. Depending on how contracts are written up, the engineering firm may be responsible for any errors and time lost. Usually errors are minor and are caught before any significant problems develop.

More than anything else, the number of errors just provides the owner with a lesser degree of confidence in the final product. Quite often in the O/G business, everything is fast paced because time is money. If there is an acceptable level of errors and omissions, I guess it would relate to the urgency of the project. While I make no excuses for errors, I would expect them in a fast track project. You guys on the construction end know when construction deadlines are absolutely nuts. It's likely that the same project is driving the engineers nuts. It is a good idea for you to be as alert as you can to catch errors and be the heroes.
