We have a Project requiring replacement of distribution equipment on an offshore platform. The Project Management would prefer not to replace existing LV power cable.
The platform was installed in 1984 (25 years ago). The cable was probably manufactured between 1981 - 1983. The cables have been in service since original installation. We do not have information on failures on any of the cables in the past. We do not have test records from commisioning stage, or since the cable was originally installed.
The Okonite cable type is as follows:
4/C #500MCM AWG CLX MC-HL(XHHW)(600V) (Part Number 571-31-3316)
We have the following questions:
1) Has Okonite been made aware LV MC cable failures? If such data exists, how many years had the cable been in service before failure date? What was the cause?
2) What is the expected manufacturer's useful life for this type of cable, if it was installed correctly, and not subjected to excessive overload and shortcuit conditions?
