Does anyone have experience with a HIPPS system installed subsea?
Advantage for us would be that 30 km pipeline from wells to platform wouldn't have to be designed for wellhead pressure. However, HIPPS system requires frequent testing to meet SIL requirements, which seems difficult on subsea valves/transmitters...
If anyone has experience, what was HIPPS system composed of? How is testing of the system done?

Hello.

I don't think there are a lot of HIPPS currently in use around the world. The only one I know for sure is for Kristin field, in Norway, operated by Statoil. It is a gas field and the reservoir pressure is something like 700 bars (moreover, it is very hot). Actually, it is not even in use, since first gas is expected in two years or so. Nevertheless, you can probably find articles about it in OTC and the likes.
The subsea system will be provided by AkerKvaerner: maybe could you contact them to get a glimpse on the HIPPS complexity (I have seen a PID but don't have it).
For usual pressures (up to, say, 300 bars), and since you have a problem for 30 km of pipeline "only", my feeling is that extra steel will always cost you less than any sophisticated devices.

HIPPS to be installed both on Kirstin & Rhum

Kirstin
Wellhead Shut-In Pressure = 740 Bar
Pipeline Design Pressure = 330 Bar
Tieback Length = 7 Km (?)

BP Rhum Tie-back to Bruce
Wellhead Shut-In Pressure = 1035 Bar
Infield Pipeline Design Pressure = 709 Bar
Pipeline Design Pressure = 210 Bar
Tieback Length = 44 Km

Thank you Alph. Could you please answer following questions:

- Are you talking about HIPPS systems installed subsea?
- What will HIPPS systems be composed of?
- How will the HIPSS systems be tested and maintained?

Thank you for your consideration.

Answers to your Questions

- Are you talking about HIPPS systems installed subsea?
YES

- What will HIPPS systems be composed of?
2oo3 voting high pressure trips with additional actuated valving.

- How will the HIPSS systems be tested and maintained?
Don't have any details on the actual philosophy, but would guess that it would based function testing frequencies.

I went to a high level presentation on the Rhum development so just ask if you have further questions.
